Have you joined the skin oil revolution that’s taking the beauty world by storm?

We’ve used the basics in skin care for eons: jojoba oil and sweet almond oil are two often-seen players. Coconut oil secured a spot with health lovers across the globe for consumption and topical use as well. Argan oil can now be found in its pure form, and as a staple in many highly effective lip balms, moisturizers, serums, shampoos and conditioners, even cosmetics such as foundation, lipstick and mascara. It’s clear that we’ve developed a full-fledged love affair with essential fatty acids and nutrient rich oils that our skin just gobbles up. So what’s next? How about barbary fig seed oil.

La Bella Figura truly was one of the first, if not the first, U.S. beauty brand to bring this rich cactus seed oil to market. Where does it come from?  A thorny cactus called Opuntia Ficus Indica Cactus, more commonly known as prickly pear. Growing in arid and semi-arid regions, it most likely originated in Mexico, yet has become a key domesticated crop important to the agricultural economies of many other countries including Spain, Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Chile, Brazil, and Turkey, among others.

AND

NOW SOUTH AFRICA

WATERKLOOF FARM OFS.

USED IN OUR COSMETIC RANGE OF PRODUCTS.

However, we have it on good authority that the best barbary fig seed oil is cold pressed organic, Fair Trade certified from Tunisia. Apparently, sourcing here ensures the oil is pure seed oil and not a macerated version of inferior quality it has also come to lite that South Africa in the Orange Free State region is now producing the quality that is called for it is pure and cold pressed. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. The cheaper the oil, the less likely that it’s pure seed oil, which is where all of the most important and potent skin beneficial constituents come from. What’s more, the seeds are only 5 percent oil, making extraction difficult with low yields per batch thus it is one of the most expensive oils available.

So, what’s the big deal?

Check out the stats: Barbary fig seed oil is exceptionally high in vitamin E and linoleic acid, beating out even argan oil. Also rich in beneficial betalains (powerful antioxidants found in beets), active minerals and amino acids, barbary fig seed oil protects against free radicals, stimulates new cell growth, and calms inflammation. It’s easily absorbed, penetrating below the surface of the skin with ease for maximum benefits without leaving any oily residue behind – a key feature for reticent beauty oil users.

An ideal option for intense, skin hydration, barbary fig seed oil is beneficial to all skin types, supporting skin repair after trauma and providing protection from environmental stress. Excellent for mature skin, it helps address signs of aging including hyperpigmentation, while the high fatty acid content plumps skin to help smooth wrinkles and increase firmness. Not only useful on the skin, barbary fig seed oil is also highly beneficial to dry hair and scalp, soothing irritation and boosting shine.

Argan oil has enjoyed a lofty status as THE beauty oil to beat over the past couple of years, thanks to its hefty vitamin content and its ability to combat everything from low-grade skin conditions to straw-like hair. And yet, there's another natural ingredient on the rise that does everything Argan oil does, but better—and, what would you know? It's also from the desert.

Cactus seed oil—which also goes by prickly pear seed oil and barbary fig seed oil—contains larger doses of the very same vitamins and antioxidants that make Argan oil so great. This includes large amounts of linoleic acid (a fatty acid that is essential in stimulating healthy cell production and turnover), as well as vitamin E (which provides protection and helps skin retain moisture), and flavonoids, which are anti-inflammatory. Cactus oil is light and absorbs well, while providing a huge kick of moisture to skin cells. And all of this, of course, bodes well for keeping our complexions looking young. "It soothes, hydrates, and reduces inflammation that damages collagen, explaining why it's used to prevent skin aging," confirms Dr. Joshua Zeichner, dermatologist at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.

It all sounds great, but take it from us firsthand: Though these last few weeks of bitter winter had left our skin dry, damaged, and flaky, just a few days of swapping this magical ingredient into our skincare regime has proven completely transformative. So amazing, in fact, that we're fairly confident it'll take us through the tricky seasonal transition and straight into the desert-like summer.

OMEGA 6
Helps to combat dehydration and boosts skin's moisture.
Omega-6 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can’t make them -- you have to get them through food. Along with omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function, as well as normal growth and development. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), they help stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system
What are omega-6 fatty acids? Should I be concerned about the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids in my diet?
Omega-6 fatty acids (also known as n-6 fatty acids) are also polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients, meaning that our bodies cannot make them and we must obtain them from food. They are abundant in the Western diet; common sources include safflower, corn, cottonseed, and soybean oils.

Omega-6 fatty acids lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and reduce inflammation, and they are protective against heart disease. So both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are healthy. While there is a theory that omega-3 fatty acids are better for our health than omega-6 fatty acids, this is not supported by the latest evidence. Thus the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is basically the “good divided by the good,” so it is of no value in evaluating diet quality or predicting disease.
What is Prickly Pear Seed Oil (Barbary Fig Oil or Opuntia Ficus Indica)?
Prickly Pear Seed Oil
The Opuntia Ficus Indica plant is a member of the cactus family and is commonly known as Prickly Pear (also known as India Fig Opuntia or Barbary Fig). Native to Mexico, it can now be found in various arid and semi-arid areas of the world such as Morocco. Also called the miracle plant for its ability to survive during long droughts and still produce healthy fruits, the cactus plant grows in open fields without exposure to fertilizers or pesticides. The Prickly Pear fruit contains numerous small black seeds from which the precious Prickly Pear Seed Oil is extracted. The oil has been used by generations of Berber women to fend off the effects of dry desert and hot conditions.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil is one of the most expensive beauty oils in the world. Its production requires a labour intensive and time consuming (up to four days) process manually handled by Moroccan women at cooperatives. The Prickly Pear seeds are separated from the pulp and are then dried before being cold pressed. Because each seed contains only 5% of oil, up to 60 lbs. of seeds (and a half a ton of fruits) are required to yield about 34oz. of oil.
Composition & Benefits Prickly Pear Seed Oil has a high concentration of Tocopherol (Vitamin E) and essential fatty acids (Linoleic Acid or Omega 6). This oil contains more Tocopherol than any other oil available in the beauty care market (almost 150% more Tocopherol than Argan oil). "Tocopherols are molecules with strong antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties."*
Prickly Pear Seed Oil is a potent non-greasy treatment (due to its high level of antioxidant and fatty acids) that is easily absorbed by the skin. Among its many natural benefits, Pure Prickly Pear Seed Oil:

protects against free radicals ( highest level of vitamin E)
nourishes, moisturizes, and softens the skin
tightens pores for a smoother and refined skin texture
prevents premature aging and wrinkles formation
brightens dark spots and under-eye shadows
erases hyperpigmentation spots
Pure Prickly Pear Seed Oil is ideal to use as a night serum for an intense treatment of the face, neck, and décolleté that leaves your skin with a healthy natural glow.
